The facts and fictions of producing hydrogen on demand to increase
your fuel mileage.
Do Hydrogen boosters work, and do they really boost fuel mileage?
If they convert enough
water to hydrogen and oxygen gas, Yes they do. How much increased
fuel mileage depends on the design and efficiency of the actual
unit.
The addition of Hydrogen and Oxygen gas to an engines air intake
supply will greatly improve the combustion of both gasoline and
diesel fuel. Gasoline and diesel fuel are both Hydrocarbons. That
is Hydrogen combined with Carbon
chain molecules. Gasoline has 5 to 12 carbons joined with Hydrogen
molecules, while diesel fuel has from 14 to 25 carbons joined to the
hydrogen molecules.
How much fuel DOES an engine waste
and how does the addition of Hydrogen and Oxygen burn more of it?
Let's use the example of
Nitrous Oxide. Those little cans of Nitrous Oxide on an engine will
give your engine a power boost for 3-15 seconds, and make your
engine feel like it has gained a 25% increase in horsepower!
Nitrous Oxide IS NOT A FUEL. It is an oxidizer. These systems are
merely adding extra Oxygen to your engine to burn more of the fuel.
More fuel burned = more power. More fuel burned = greater fuel
mileage.
When we say we need 'air' for things to burn, that's not really
accurate. To burn, a fuel needs the Oxygen content in the air. Air
consists of approx 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.038%
carbon dioxide, trace amounts of other gases,
and a variable amount (average around 1%) of water vapor.
Only 20% of the 'air' entering your engine is oxygen that is
needed to burn your fuel. The other 80% is just taking up space and
interfering with the burning of your fuel.
Any volume of hydrogen has 2
½ times the energy/power as an
equal volume of gasoline.
